ASHING

In the ashing process, the Vical acrylic is buffed with a slurry or paste of pumice abrasive and water. In production operations, some fabricators have found this process to be more economical than sanding and polishing.

Several grades of ashing compounds are used successively. Higher wheel speeds can be used when ashing than when polishing, because the wet abrasive cools the work. Stitched cotton buffs 10" to 12" in diameter are often driven at 1750 rpm. Since the part must be held very firmly against the wheel, it is necessary to use twohorsepower motors.
